Day is not homophobic
I am extremely disappoi-nted with Patrick White and his blatantly false misrepresentation of Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day [Does Stockwell Day really represent Canadians?, Opinions, September 25]. Every aspect of White's argument is completely ridiculous. While I certainly don't agree with his obviously naïve statement on the flat tax issue, what really irks me is his irresponsible labeling of Stockwell Day as a "Christian charmer" and a homophobe. White started by denouncing the Christian faith and suggesting that Day is using his Christian morals as a political platform, a sort of 'charming gimmick.' Is it at all possible that Day believes that a good nuclear family (one mother, one father) based on Christian values is a good way to raise a family? Day simply believes that the physical and moral issues involved in homosexual relationships do not constitute the right for marriage between two people of the same sex. You may disagree with him, and that is fine, but don't label Day as homophobic. A phobia is an abnormal fear of something. Homophobic people feel the need to cause harm to gay people or get away from them because they have a bizarre, abnormal fear or hate for homosexuals. Do you really think Stockwell is scared of homosexuals? Would he run away in terror from a gay person who wanted to talk to him? That's what Mr. White is implying by declaring that Stockwell Day is homophobic. Just because Day believes in the sanctity of marriage between two people of the opposite sex who can naturally conceive a child, does not make him scared of gays or lesbians, nor does that mean he hates them; he simply disagrees with their lifestyle. Patrick White's way too liberal definition of homophobia is way out of line and needs to be re-evaluated.
