Is Stockwell gay?
casey ydenberg

If Stockwell Day is not homophobic, he might also be gay [Day is not homophobic, Letters, Oct. 2]. Of course, this requires you to believe that words do not evolve any more than, in Stockwell's doctrine, species do.

As a new, young MP with an Okanagan home and a whole party behind him, Stockwell might very well be gay. By 'gay,' I of course mean, happy, joyous and frolicsome.

That's not what the word 'gay' means anymore, just as 'homophobia' no longer directly relates to its root word: 'phobia.'

No, Stockwell won't sea-doo away in terror from a homosexual person. He is homophobic, however, because he believes that homosexual couples should be denied rights that are granted to heterosexual couples.

If he were doing the same thing to our Chinese citizens we would call this 'racism.' For lack of a better term, we call this form of discrimination 'homophobia.'

So what? Although the majority of Canadians are not social conservatives, Stockwell's idea of lowering taxes just might be popular enough with the electorate. We have a good chance of electing a homophobic Prime Minister.

So ask yourself: is this an accurate representation of our country's beliefs? Is this how we want Canada represented on the world stage? Do we really want to reverse the social policies of the late Mr. Trudeau, and move backward against the changing moral values of the rest of the western world?

Think about these questions before you vote for a tax cut.
