Do lunch elsewhere
Upon reading Through the Eyes of Racism and Ignorance: A Daytrip to the U.S. [Features, Oct. 22] one may be unclear to whom the 'racist' and 'ignorant' charge applies. These disturbing times are certainly tests for a free and liberal society and all that they stand for. Indeed, there certainly does seem to be concern that Canada and the U.S. are not passing the grade. There is a gulf between ideology and reality and it seems that our 'victimised' students may have happened across it. Given the paranoia gripping the U.S. these days, only a wanton would decide to take a 'day-trip' to the U.S. Border line-ups, increased security, and a poor exchange rate are all reason to avoid the U.S. as a place one would choose to 'do lunch.' Furthermore, John's exulting in the fact that his being white is a reason 'why [John] is more of a threat to national security than any Muslim, Arab or immigrant' because of his 'pre-determined power, authority and status in this country' is a frightening statement. One may also wonder why Mohamad, although seemingly aware of his 'rights' and 'legalities,' refrained from voicing them to the border-guards. He claims that he 'knew how [they] worked, and there was going to be no rational compromise.' A rather hasty prejudice, given his situation. Of course, it is unfortunate what occurred on Oct. 20 to these people. We need to make everyone aware of these incidents and ensure that they do not happen again. However, these charges 'racist' and 'ignorant' are too strong and unfair. Fortunately we do live in a society that we can rant against such perceived injustices. It could have been much, much worse had they chosen many other countries these days to 'do lunch.'
