this week in Peak history
peak staff

1993

It seems Gordon Campbell was making the news in the 1990s too, albeit in a much less contentious manner. The February 4, 1993, issue of the Peak contained a news brief about then-Vancouver Mayor Campbell declaring that week Board of Trade Week. If only all his announcements could be so benign. Also in the news briefs was a warning that Trojan Condoms had issued a recall because of defects in production, the announcement of B.C.'s earthquake response plan along with the scheduling of a "mock earthquake" for November, and a demand for platelets was issued by the Red Cross.

In other news, surprisingly, there was conflict between the Canadian Federation of Students and then-minister of advanced education Tom Perry. Saying "tuition fees are not a significant barrier to education," Perry riled delegates at the semi-annual general meeting of the B.C. branch of the CFS. The federation was starting a "Freeze Fees" campaign in an attempt to prevent an imminent tuition fees hike. Look around you folks.

And in a rare mention of the engineering department in the Peak, the annual Polar Plunge was advertised. For every $50 raised, an engineer would be tossed into the frigid and wholly unappetising waters of the AQ reflection pond. However, in the good ol' days it involved a colouring contest as well as soaked engineers.
