Synopsis of the SFSS’ SGM and AGM

Clea Moray, Forum SGM Oversight Committee Chair, on behalf of The Forum SGM Oversight Committee

Two General Meetings of the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) will be held this Wednesday, October 25, at 2:30 p.m. (registration starts at 1:30 p.m. for both meetings — remember to bring your ID card). All SFU students are entitled to attend and vote at both meetings. One meeting is an SFSS Special General Meeting (SGM). The other is an SFSS Annual General Meeting (AGM). Meeting Locations: the SGM will be held in Convocation Mall. The AGM will be held in the East Gym.

Meeting Conveners: the SGM was called by the SFSS Forum, and announced to students on Monday, October 2. The AGM was called by the SFSS Board of Directors, and was announced to students on Wednesday, October 4.

Meeting Agendas: The main items on the agenda of the SGM are 1) resolutions to impeach seven SFSS Directors, 2) proposed bylaw amendments to change the powers of the SFSS Graduate Issues Committee, and 3) a proposed bylaw amendment that would mean that some SFSS referenda would be voted on only by undergrads, and some only by grads. The main items on the agenda of the AGM are receipts of the annual reports from the SFSS Board, SFSS treasurer, and the external auditor. Members may submit motions for the AGM (but not special resolutions, such as motions of impeachment or bylaw changes).

Meeting Validity: Both meetings appear to be valid. Some SFSS Directors (mostly those up for impeachment at the SGM) have stated that they believe the SGM to be invalid. Legal correspondence from the SFSS lawyer to Forum Chair Titus Gregory, and from Mr. Gregory’s lawyer to the SFSS lawyer can be viewed online at http://www.studentunion.ca/forum/documents.html. These documents outline the details of this dispute.

More Information: Both meetings have official websites where students can get more information, including the official agendas. The website for the SGM is location at http://www.studentunion.ca/forum/sgm.html. The website for the AGM is located at http://www.sfss.ca/agm.html.

I encourage all students to come out on Wednesday to participate in their student society.
